At Ozaukee Child Care & Preschool (OCC), we believe children learn best when guidance is positive, constructive, age-appropriate, and consistent. Our goal is to help each child develop a positive self-concept while learning how to manage emotions, make appropriate choices, and interact respectfully with others.
Our teachers use a variety of strategies to encourage positive behavior and support children as they learn and grow.
To Prevent Challenging Behaviors, Teachers Will:
- Model appropriate behavior and demonstrate positive ways to interact with others.
- Create predictable routines and supportive classroom environments that help children understand expectations.
- Use songs, music, games, and engaging activities to minimize long waiting periods and challenging transitions.
- Recognize and encourage positive behavior through specific, meaningful praise.
When Challenging Behavior Occurs, Teachers Will:
- Redirect: Guide the child toward an appropriate activity or behavior.
- Distract: Change the child's focus when appropriate.
- Communicate: Talk with the child about what happened and help them understand what they can do differently.
- Teach: Help children develop the skills they need to manage emotions, solve problems, and make appropriate choices.
OCC recognizes that children develop at different rates and need different levels of support. Our teachers work to understand the reason behind a behavior and use strategies that are appropriate for the child's age and developmental level.
Our goal is not simply to stop challenging behavior—it is to teach children the skills they need to be successful.
More information about OCC's guidance and discipline practices is provided during enrollment.
